Walking through the Thicket

February 23, 2022

It’s so good to be back!!!!! Yaaaay!! Yippy do da!!!!

It’s been more than three months since I’ve blogged. I played hooky for a while to take care of some urgent business, that will consume the time of even the most efficient. I missed being here…I love this place where I share my thoughts and experiences. This is my place of catharsis!

Since I was a young person, I heard of the phenomenon called retirement. It was something way yonder, in this dark hole of unknown things. My Mom retired when she still lived in New York City, a few decades back, and she never talked about it with us, what it meant, etc. etc.

My coworker, Ms. Barb, retired recently, and I had heard her talk vaguely about things she was doing to prepare. Another acquaintance retired about five years before that, and she gave me the names of two books I should read five years before I retired. Since I have more than five years to retire, I stored those names away safely to pull out when needed and equip myself for retirement.

Well hah!!!! hah, hah, hah!!!

Then came 2021. One day I went into work to recertify my CPR certificate. I got to engage in new technology with advanced mannequins. With each movement I made to rescue my mannequins, I experienced painful discomfort. Let’s just say, this mundane task that health care professionals partake in, brought a dramatic change to my world. That was June 2021. For the next four months (felt like a lifetime), I got mixed up with phone calls, paperwork, disappointment, shock, disillusionment, physical pain, emotional pain, all whilst trying to figure out how to recover.

Meet now a new Retiree!! Me!! A 4-month-old Retiree. That’s how I would recover! I had not yet begun to read those two books that would prepare me for this life change, because I thought that I had time. And don’t forget, I’m the author of this blog, Lifewithoutmentors! Yup, so I’ve been traversing the red tape of insurance companies, to name but just one entity, in this web of confusion.

To anyone under the age of 40 years old reading this post, do what you want, it’s your life, you too can choose to walk through the maze I have for the past 6 months! Or you could go find you some mentors, personal ones, career ones, life ones, and make your journey a lot simpler and easier!! But, I’m not here to teach you. I took that ‘Old Folks Vow,’ not to teach anyone that hasn’t asked to be taught…but, I am here to share my lifewithoutmentors, and to say that this undertaking was extremely difficult, and it didn’t have to be. But, I did it. (Bow, bow)

More to come…

I have been a health care professional for decades and worked in hospitals all over the United States. Originally from the Caribbean. I have noticed over the years that I really enjoy creating beautiful experiences for others through oral and written feedback as well as creating events to celebrate milestones in life, as an Event Planner.
