I have spent the last 3 decades at the bedside of people who are so sick they needed to be hospitalized for 1 day to 3 months or more. I’ve served them with every ounce of energy I could muster, using physical, emotional, and mental capacities in ways that have overwhelmed me yet brought fulfillment and satisfaction into my life.
I have served them in cities like New York, Pensacola, New Orleans, Suffolk/VA, Honolulu, and currently in Virginia. During this time as a staff nurse, I’ve also enjoyed writing and I think it has served as a form of release and escape from my 3-11pm shifts of encountering incapacitating illness to human life and it’s resulting suffering, hopelessness, frustration, and anger up close.
I have always enjoyed writing, and perhaps the seeds were sown when I was a pre-teen growing up in the Caribbean island of Trinidad and can remember always being tied to the pages of books, reading stories of adventure such as Brer Rabbit, books about fairies and goblins, Little Women, and Wuthering Heights, to name a few.
Today, sitting on the edge of becoming a 60-year old, I find myself wanting to write about the many things I’ve done and experienced, without having a mentor to assist me in getting to the places I’ve often desired. Occasionally, I have watched others being mentored and I have felt ‘deprived’ and perhaps ‘disadvantaged,’ and I’ve wondered what my life would have been like had I had a mentor(s) at various stages of my life. And then, I realize that maybe I was just meant to be a PIONEER instead. (LOL)
And thus, no other name seemed as appropriate for my blog as lifewithoutmentors, or maybe I should have named it instead, myawesomelifewithoutmentors!!
I hope as you read this, you will join me as I share tales of my awesome life and you will also share your tales, and I welcome those who have had mentors because I would love to hear what they have made possible for you too. I think having personal and professional mentors are a God-send and I want to encourage everyone to dig deep and choose to mentor another.
As I begin this BLOG, I also am looking forward to the many more adventures in travelling, meeting new people on my BLOG, and especially creating, because I really love creating experiences for others in my role as an Event Planner (some of which I will share with you). I hope we will share some good laughs, and perhaps be encouraged by each other and inspired too!
Lastly, you would not really know me best if I did not share another aspect of my life. In fact, it is so important that it will have a column devoted just to that. The Bustey! He’s my 2 1/2 year old Boxer-mix that I got from a shelter when he was 5months old. Here’s a recent testimonial I want to share. One of his caregivers recently heard he was coming to the doggie daycare and she responded, “Yessssssss!!” and stated if she came back in another life, she wants to be The Bustey!
